Project Overview

The Education & Livelihood for Dignified Life Project was implemented to improve public health, dignity, and resilience among marginalized communities through education, hygiene, and sustainable WASH systems.

Key Achievements

1. School WASH Improvement

  • Installed 20 handwashing stations in government schools and ECCD centers

  • Improved hygiene practices for 9,200 students and 175 teachers annually

  • Established student-led WASH clubs in 30 schools

  • Trained 90 teachers on child-friendly hygiene education

2. Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)

  • Conducted MHM awareness sessions in 30 schools

  • Distributed 3,500 sanitary and hygiene kits to adolescent girls

  • Reduced school absenteeism and promoted dignity and safe hygiene practices

3. Community Hygiene & Behavior Change

  • Mobilized 50 Mothers’ Groups for household hygiene promotion

  • Trained 3,000 community members on sanitation and hygiene

  • Conducted campaigns on:

    • Safe water use

    • Handwashing with soap

    • Open defecation prevention

    • Solid waste management

  • Organized public awareness events on Global Handwashing Day and World Toilet Day

4. Emergency WASH Response

  • Distributed 4,010 hygiene kits during COVID-19

  • Provided WASH services to 11 quarantine centers

  • Supported 65 fire-affected households

  • Reached 2,980 people with emergency hygiene education

5. Sustainability & System Strengthening

  • Worked with municipalities and health posts for long-term WASH maintenance

  • Developed local WASH sustainability plans

  • Strengthened monitoring through WASH committees and Mothers’ Groups

  • Advocated for increased local government WASH budgeting

Impact

Through strong partnerships and community engagement, the project contributed to improved health, dignity, and resilience for thousands of people in Sarlahi District. The initiative strengthened school systems, empowered women and girls, and supported sustainable, community-led WASH solutions.
